AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) AT&T = American Telephone and Telegraph. American multinational conglomerate holding company. AT&T is the world's largest telecommunications company, the largest provider of mobile telephone services, and the largest provider of fixed telephone services in the United States. Founded in 1885 as Bell Telephone Company and one of its subsidiaries was the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). AT&T was acquired by the Bell Company in 1899. In 1982, U.S. regulators required AT&T to divest its regional subsidiaries and turning them each into individual companies. These new companies were known as Regional Bell Operating Companies, or more informally, Baby Bells. Southwestern Bell, one of the Baby Bells, changed its name to SBC Communications and started a series of acquisitions. In 2005, SBC purchased AT&T and adopted the better-known AT&T name and brand.
